Our 2019 poultry season is closed
Why Pre-Order? Why Barnabas Farm Chicken?
Early in the spring we'll begin bringing in chicks monthly in groups of 25-100, depending upon orders. Chicks are ordered up to a month in advance of delivery, and we phone the hatchery about a week before expected delivery to tweek our numbers and confirm.
On delivery day, the chicks are picked up early in the morning (dare we guess..before many of you are even awake?), and we hurry to get them settled into a warm pen. We would have worked the day before to make sure the pen was prepared for the special needs of day old chicks - warm and clean. While each chick is lifted into the pen (this is the most fun part - all fuzzy cuteness) it is counted and its beak dipped in the water (yes..some are actually too dumb to find the water otherwise). For those first few days, we check the chicks quite frequently... paying attention to temperature and making sure all are happy and healthy.
The chicks will spend the next 3ish weeks in this pen, with the heat lamp and boundaries being gradually widened until they no longer need the extra warmth and protection. By week 3+ (weather permitting), the chicks are picked up carefully, one by one, and loaded into cages for their trek out to the pastured pens.
Twice a day chores now involve filling buckets of water and feed to haul out to the pastured pens. The pens are scootched to new, clean grass, birds are looked over to make sure they're healthy and well, and the waterers and feeders are filled.
Your pre-order helps us in so many ways! Our orders with the hatchery are placed early in the spring, but we tweak the numbers as we go to make sure we have enough for our customers. Knowing what to expect for our season also helps us to plan enough pens, feeders, waterers, and non-gmo feed.
What do YOU get out of the deal? Quality chicken, raised the right way for $2.50 per lb!
Whole chicken (ready to cook, can, or freeze). Chicken MUST be picked up at our farm on the scheduled Poultry Pick-Up day. When you order, we will give you an estimated week for pick-up and will confirm the actual day as processing day draws near.
